Ethiopia is set to make history once again today by aiming to plant 700 million tree seedlings in a single day, as part of its national Green Legacy Initiative campaign, which is becoming 7 years old. Starting at 6:00 AM local time, millions of people across the country will join this massive effort, described by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as a reflection of the strength, unity, and determination of the Ethiopian people.

Ahmed emphasized on social media that this campaign goes beyond tree planting—it is a call to action for all citizens, young and old, urban and rural, to participate in environmental restoration, water source protection, livelihood improvement, and securing a sustainable future for coming generations.

“This is about more than planting trees,” the statement read. “It is about securing our future—protecting our environment, strengthening our food systems, and preserving the infrastructure we built with our blood, sweat, and resources.”

According to TV BRICS, for this rainy season, 8.5 billion seedlings of forest, fruit-bearing, and ornamental species have been prepared, with the goal of reaching a total of 48 billion in seven years.

Ethiopia plans to share its Green Legacy experience with other countries at the upcoming 2nd Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) in September in Addis Ababa , positioning the campaign as a model for the continent’s climate resilience efforts.
